How Long Will a Smile Makeover Take?
For someone who avoids smiling because of feeling self-conscious, a smile makeover may be the answer. Just as a style makeover improves someone’s personal fashion and a hair makeover can help make a good impression, a makeover of a person’s mouth and smile can improve confidence and attitude.
What is involved in a smile makeover?
There may be several steps involved in creating a more pleasing smile. It can involve repairs to teeth, lips and gums. Procedures will take more than one visit and some things may require maintenance visits.
Damage and cavities
The first step to a brighter and healthier smile is to have the teeth fully examined for existing damage. Decay and cavities need to be cleaned out and filled. Any abscesses must be treated or extracted. Untreated caries can cause infections in the mouth and gums and may even lead to disease in the heart or other areas of the body.
Before moving forward with more permanent whitening measures, the existing natural teeth should be cleaned by a technician. Mold are then taken and trays created in an exact match to the patient’s teeth. The trays are filled with a professional-quality whitening gel and placed against the teeth. Repeated treatments may be needed to reach and maintain maximum whiteness.
Veneers, crowns and bridges
Of course, a whiter smile is highly desired by almost everyone, but whitening of the natural teeth is only the beginning for many patients. Veneers or even crowns may be needed to correct deep staining due to certain foods or medications.
Thinning enamel and distal cracking can also be corrected by the application of veneers. Thin porcelain sheets are bonded to the surface of prepared teeth using a cement cured with a special polymeric light. Uneven tooth lengths and gaps between teeth can also be corrected with veneers.
In cases where an underlying abscess had damaged the tooth and root, a crown can restore form and function. If extraction becomes necessary, a bridge of three teeth may be needed to fill the gap.
Mouth and lips
The natural appearance of wrinkles and puckers along the lip line can occur with age. Lips may also become thinner and lose definition or become uneven. These issues may be a detriment to self-confidence, but both can be improved with hyaluronic acid injections and skin treatments to smooth and fill the area.
For some patients, the gums may be exposed to an extreme amount because the lips pull back too far. A gummy smile can be reduced by injections that relax the lips so they do not show as much of the gums when engaged in a full smile. Injections can also be used to plump the gums and fill any triangular gaps between the tops of the teeth. This is different than the type of space that appears between teeth.
There are many ways a smile makeover can make a difference in a patient’s life. The possible boost to self-confidence and health benefits make it worth checking into this procedure.
