When to Consider a Tooth Extraction

tooth extraction Tucson, AZ

Getting a tooth extraction may sound intimidating, but in actuality, this procedure can improve one’s oral and dental health, while also relieving pain. It is recommended to consult with a dentist about the possibility of extraction. However, being aware of when a tooth should be pulled can be helpful. Want to know whether to consider a tooth extraction? Read over a few important factors and issues that may indicate a need for extraction.

Times a tooth extraction may be recommended

Having a tooth pulled can be a benefit to oral health. There are a few times when patients should consider it. Ultimately, a dentist should be the one to help a patient decide on extraction or another treatment, but in these situations it may be a likely solution.

Pain

If there is severe pain occurring, then a tooth extraction may be worth considering. Having a bothersome tooth pulled may help relieve the pain, especially if there is an infection that is causing it to occur.

It is important to note that not all tooth pain should necessitate extraction. However, if the dentist determines that the pain will not stop unless or until the tooth is removed, then extraction may be the recommended option. A tooth that is decayed or on its way to decaying should likely be pulled. Once decay sets in, it can be difficult for the dentist to reverse it. However, an extraction can prevent the decay from spreading to other areas within the mouth such as the gums or another tooth.

It may seem drastic to consider an extraction just for a small amount of decay, but such damage leads to a dead tooth, which will destroy the root and may infect the jawbone. It can be better to have the tooth pulled and to undergo a replacement treatment than risk the decay spreading.

Jaw discomfort

In some rare instances, a person may have an overcrowded mouth, which can result in a lot of soreness or discomfort within the jaw. It may be worth considering tooth extraction if the mouth is just too small to support all of the teeth.

A dentist can evaluate a person’s teeth and determine which ones, if any, may not be crucial to the function of the mouth. If it is determined that not all the teeth are necessary, then extraction can be done in order to create more room, thus eliminating discomfort, soreness and overcrowding.

Gum disease

Gum disease is quite common, but it is rare that tooth extraction can offer a solution to the infection. However, there are times when having a tooth pulled can significantly improve the health of the gums.
