Ceramic Crowns for Dental Restorations

A ceramic crown can be used when a dental restoration is needed to save a tooth that is in bad shape. These dental restorations can fit over a tooth to cap it. Ceramic is a kind of material that looks very natural, thus allowing for a real looking tooth. This is the only kind of material that has this quality to it. Keep reading to find out more about this type of dental restoration.

When a ceramic crown might be used

An all-ceramic crown might be used when it comes to restoring a more visible tooth. This may include a front tooth that was chipped or cracked. Additionally, it could include a tooth that has damage severe enough that a veneer would not work. A ceramic crown can be matched to the rest of the teeth.

In some cases, dental veneers or cosmetic bonding might be used with a ceramic crown. This can offer a better appearance for the patient’s smile. This procedure might be used when the strength of the rest of the teeth need to be restored as well. The other procedures may be done because the other teeth do not need a crown.

Placing the dental restoration

It might take about two visits to place the crown on the tooth. During the first visit, the dentist will take impressions of the tooth. Then this can be sent to a lab to have the crown created. The tooth will be shaped and prepared for the ceramic crown. During the second visit, the permanent crown will be placed over the tooth, completing the dental restoration.

The life of a dental crown

A ceramic crown can be expected to last for around 15 years. With the right cleaning techniques, the crown could last even longer than that. These dental restorations have no metal in them but might have zirconium in the makeup in order to strengthen the overall structure. Because the dental restoration needs to be able to withstand a lot of force, dentists recommend the most suitable material, depending on the tooth's location in the mouth.

Are there any other options?

Patients can choose from other kinds of crowns as well. For example, that might include a porcelain crown fused to a metal base. This offers strength for the teeth in the back, which often undergo a lot of chewing pressure. However, gold crowns are often the strongest type and are good for patients not looking for a cosmetic restoration. There are other kinds of caps or crowns, such as onlays and inlays.

Choosing the right kind of dental restoration

The dentist can help the patient to decide on the right kind of crown. That way, a more natural-looking smile can be achieved through the dental restoration process. A ceramic crown will also be strong enough to last for many years to come, especially if the necessary steps are taken to ensure proper care.
