Dental Care for an Abscessed Tooth from a Family Dentist

When an abscessed tooth develops, it is scary for many patients but it is essential to seek dental care from a family dentist as soon as possible for an abscessed tooth to prevent the infection from spreading and causing other, more severe concerns. The good news is that there are several effective ways a family dentist can treat an abscessed tooth.

Abscessed tooth treatment options from a family dentist

Every family dentist will have their own set of treatments they may offer for treating an abscessed tooth, although there are certain treatments that are fairly common. The following are four ways a family dentist may treat a patient who has an abscessed tooth.

Antibiotics

Many family dentists will opt not to prescribe antibiotics if it can be avoided. However, they are often prescribed to ensure the infection is taken care of properly and does not linger or spread. They are typically in the form of oral medication and as such is the least invasive treatment option. With that said, the family dentist will likely suggest another treatment option in addition to the antibiotics if there are other concerns.

Drain the infection

There are many instances where the family dentist may recommend a procedure to drain the infection rather than treating it through antibiotic medication. This procedure involves the dentist making a small incision to access the pocket of pus. They will then drain and remove all of the pus and then thoroughly clean and disinfect the affected area. It is more invasive than antibiotics, but a great alternative for patients and family dentists who prefer not to take or prescribe oral medication.

Root canal therapy

Root canal therapy is often necessary if the abscessed tooth is caused by severe tooth decay or dental trauma (chips, cracks, etc.). It is a similar concept to draining the infection, but slightly more invasive. It involves drilling into the tooth, removing the infected pulp and filling the tooth with a substitute material. The dentist will likely also recommend a dental crown for the tooth to ensure it is properly protected long term, especially if the tooth is severely damaged and vulnerable.

How to prevent an abscessed tooth

Family dentists will also seek to educate their patients on ways to prevent future instances of an abscessed tooth by good at-home dental care. They can provide insights on proper brushing and flossing techniques to ensure food particles and bacteria are removed, give insights on what food may increase the risk of a tooth infection and answer any questions the patient may have. Routine check-up visits and dental cleanings with a family dentist is also encouraged to help prevent an abscessed tooth and other oral health concerns.
